My workouts this week have been more "real world" workouts. Consisting of cleaning up trash left on the streets and around my home after Hurricane Ike. Since we have not had gas I've found that I'm walking much more then normal, often over 15 miles in a day. (gotta love my pedometer)
Normally I try to post uplifting pics on Wednesday, with my workouts on Galveston Beach being some of my favorite pictures. Today the pics are much different. When we're allowed on the beach I'll snap some of the erosion an of what used to be some of my favorite hangouts.

Pre-Ike Nasa Road One

Pre-Ike Boarding of the House

Post Ike - cleaning up debris off of Bay Area Blvd
(Water is normally just a small ditch here)

Post-Ike - Clear Lake over its banks - clearing streets for work trucks

Post-Ike - The Hilton

Post-Ike - Buildings under water

Post-Ike - Boats in trees

A very special thanks to my friend Paul from PaulsHealthBlog for a link to these pictures from the storm.
Words can't express what this is like for those of us down here. I am happy that we have several gas stations within 10 miles from here opening up with electricity so they are able to finally get gaas in our cars. The generator I am using to power a few extras like this laptop, cellphones and my 'fridge was also running low on gas, now I don't have to give those up.

I bet those pictures do not show the half of it.
In 1999, when Hurricane Floyd hit my hometown, I was not totally aware of the extent of the damage. I would hear things, but it was later that I found out the extent of the damage, because we were so busy working and cleaning up.
My brother and I had several chainsaws, and as soon as the storm had subsided, we were out cutting up trees and clearing debris. We worked all day and into the night, trying to help others get back to some sense of normalcy.
Later, I ended up going into flooded homes and tearing out walls and essentially gutting the entire residence.
It all just looked like a war zone. We saw the Marines and National Guard. There were helicopters flying overhead. President Clinton even came and saw the carnage.
For the most part, I had forgotten about how bad things were. But these recent hurricanes have brought back the memories.
Please keep us posted as to how you and your family are doing.
Wow. I'm glad you're all safe.
That would be so scary. I can't even imagine. I'm glad you are safe.
I stopped by because you visited my blog earlier. I wanted to thank you for the idea with the chicken and spaghetti sauce meal. Great idea and it sounds yummy. Thanks
PaulsHealthBlog.com - They don't show half of it. I've taken pictures of people, but just don't feel that I should put then on the internet. Those pictures were taken on a walk around the neighborhood with a cell phone camera.
Delightfully Healthy Thanks - I'm glad my family is all ok. I know that I can take anything as long we're all together.
Jen - Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you liked the spaghetti recipe. You should put together a recipe book for healthy eating when you are poor! I know that there are many times I'd love grilled fish but I've been stuck with a half a can of tuna because I needed to buy medicine for my kids or something else that seemed important!
Thanks everyone,
Doris
Wonderful blog
I am happy here
Reading more than once
Very cool
Heartfelt greetings
My goodness you poor thing. The exercise you are getting must be a very small positive in this nasty situation. I hope things improve for everyone there soon.
Rachel,
I'm fortunate to be able to exercise, as so many of my friends have nothing and are just overwhelmed with grief right now.
Thanks for popping in! I hope to be back to normal soon. I do love having a generator to keep me in touch with the world!
Doris
Doris, I hope things will get better for you soon. We wanted to take a drive out there to see how things are, but I'm not sure if they allow people to go in the city already. Glad to know that you really prepared for this disaster! next time, we will be too!
gmg,
Thanks for the comments, and they won't let you down I-45 much past the Clear Lake area. The city government officials tell us there is too much of a strain on the resources to let anyone down here.
On a positive note, a grocery store opened on the island today. Small steps to recovery are a good thing!
Thanks for popping in!
Doris
